feature story A sustainable approach to handling electronic waste

Chevron Information Technology team in Brazil concluded an operation in late July to sustainably dispose electronic waste accumulated in the Rio de Janeiro office.

This collection of materials, including computer casings, broken monitors and phones, telecommunications equipment, cables, and out-of-date backup tapes, were all recycled. The effort was a collaboration with tech firm HP, which operates a comprehensive electronics recycling facility in Sorocaba, São Paulo. This plant processes recycled materials to create new products.

"We had accumulated this waste over time, and it was essential for us to get rid of it properly, upholding our environmental commitment, which includes waste management and supporting a circular economy," stated Marcelo Ferraz, IT Manager for Brazil.

HP's specialized service collected over 200 boxes and 50 devices that were not boxed.

When in good condition, explains Marcelo, the equipment is set aside for donations as part of Chevron’s social investment initiatives in the country.
